Six Assumptions for Adults Learning

moodle blackboard comparison

For the course to succeed, six assumptions are crucial. These assumptions include: Meaningful and relevant information; Active inquiry, and relevancy. The course will not succeed if these assumptions are not met. There are many ways to make learning positive for adults. Read on to find out how to create an environment where adults can be comfortable and confident, and learn at their own pace. These are some of my favorite.

Six assumptions about adult learners

Adult learners become more independent as they get older and can be self-directed. They want more choice in what they learn, when they learn it, and how they learn it. By providing more choices and opportunities, educators can help adult learners learn in an environment that suits their preferences. Learning can be more fun and collaborative when adults have the ability to choose what they learn. Here are six assumptions about adult learners. Each assumption will be discussed and the ways educators can accommodate them.

Meaningful, relevant information

Adults must have a reason to continue their education. The knowledge isn't always immediately applicable to younger learners, but adults need a stronger reason to continue their education. Adults need to be able to access information in a convenient, accessible way. Therefore, educators should provide valuable, relevant information that makes the course interesting. Then, learners can explore the advantages of the program.

Active inquiry

While traditional classroom instruction focuses on teaching students to memorize facts, adults can benefit from a shift toward more active inquiry-based learning. It encourages curiosity in students and allows them to solve problems on their own. Inquiry-based learning empowers students to make decisions and can foster 21st century skills such as collaboration and perseverance. Because learning has intrinsic rewards, students are more likely to stay interested in a topic.

Relevance

There are a few key characteristics that can help you determine the relevance of adult education. Adults, in contrast to younger children, have very clear goals and prefer learning experiences which are related to them. Adults benefit from the practical knowledge gained through experience and can improve their daily work performance and develop important skills. Adults value personal relevance and experiences that give them the chance to apply what they have learnt. In addition, they seek mastery and competence over lectures.

Use of ICTs

Teachers are responsible for a variety of responsibilities, including evaluation and continuous improvement. ICTs must be guided by the development and evaluation of student performance. Inexperienced teachers can make it difficult to use ICTs effectively in education. ICTs are more commonly used by teachers who have greater levels of education and experience. This article outlines some ways that teachers can maximize ICT use within the classroom.

Learning through self-directed methods

Self-directed learning can be a huge advantage for adults. In contrast to traditional students, who depend on others to direct the learning process, self directed learners can decide their own pace. They learn how to learn on their own, and without fear of being mistaken for an imposter. Although self-directed learning is becoming more popular for adults, many are still unsure how to proceed.

FAQ

What should my eLearning course be like?

Your eLearning course needs to be interactive and encourage learners to engage with it.

This means that it is important to make the design easy to navigate and to clearly present the content.

This means that the content should be entertaining and informative.

These are the three main things that will ensure your eLearning course is compliant with these requirements.

Content

First, decide what content you want in your eLearning course. You must decide how long each section should be. You will decide how much time each topic should be covered if you're teaching someone how write letters.

Navigation

You must also decide how your learners will navigate your course. Do you want them clicking through each page one by one? Or do you want them able to jump to particular parts of the course immediately?

Design

The final step is to decide how your course should look. This includes deciding the time it will take each screen to load, and the size of the font. You must also decide whether you wish to include graphics (such photos).

Once you've made all the decisions, you can test your course and see if it works.

How do I choose which eLearning platform to use?

There are thousands upon thousands of eLearning platform options today. Some are free while some are more costly.

When choosing between these options, you need to ask yourself some questions.

  • Do you have the desire to create your own learning materials. There are many free tools that you can use to create your own eLearning course. These include Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Lectora, iSpring Suite, and Camtasia.
  • Do you want to purchase pre-made eLearning courses Several companies sell pre-packaged courses. They range from $20 to $100 per course. Mindjet, Edusoft, or Thinkful are some of the most popular.
  • Or do I prefer a combination? Many people find that mixing their own materials with those supplied by companies produces the best results.
  • Which option is right? It all depends on what your situation is. If you are new to eLearning, then you may want to start out by creating your own materials. Once you are comfortable with eLearning, however, you might want to purchase a pre-designed course.
